Admission to urology
Planned hospital admission begins with an assessment of the indications. This guide will help you gather documents, discuss treatment and prepare for admission. Obtain the list of investigations and your individual instructions from the clinic: they depend on the operation, coexisting conditions and type of anesthesia.
First the treatment plan. Then the date and preparation. From consultation to hospital admission
- Book a consultation. For an in-person appointment, call the RZD Medicine contact center and name the doctor: Artem Vladimirovich Ershov. If you need a review of existing investigations or a second opinion, you can start with an online consultation.
- Prepare your medical history. Include your symptoms, previous operations, other medical conditions, regular medicines and allergies. If you have a stent, nephrostomy or catheter, provide the date it was inserted and attach the discharge summary.
- Discuss the plan. The consultation assesses indications, possible treatments, alternatives and the need for further investigations. Booking an appointment or sending scans does not yet mean that surgery has been agreed.
- Confirm the practical arrangements. Separately check the date, department, admission time and location, the documents needed for registration and the list of tests. If you are travelling from another city, do this before buying tickets.
Documents and investigations
Collect your materials in one folder. Bring what has already been done; do not repeat tests without a doctor's order.
- Passport and insurance or contractual documents requested by the clinic; referral and discharge summaries, if issued.
- CT, MRI and ultrasound reports, along with the CT/MRI images themselves in DICOM format: on a disc, a storage device or via an agreed method of transferring the archive. A photo of a screen does not replace the original images.
- Blood and urine tests, cultures, ECG and specialist consultations — as specified by the clinic. Previous results are useful for comparison.
- If being investigated for a tumour, bring the pathology report; confirm separately whether slides and tissue blocks need to be provided.
There is no universal test list or single validity period. Ask the department for its current instructions for your specific procedure.
Medicines and other medical conditions
Write down the names of your medicines, doses and times taken. Separately note medicines that affect blood clotting, diabetes medicines and allergy information. Bring your regular medicines in their original packaging.
Do not stop or change medications yourself. Obtain individual instructions in advance: what to continue, what to change temporarily and what to take on the morning of surgery. Tell the doctor about a pacemaker, previous thromboses and any difficulties with earlier anaesthesia.
The day before and the day of admission
The anaesthetist or ward will tell you when to stop eating and drinking. Follow the instructions you receive rather than a universal rule from the internet. Also confirm hygiene preparation and the need for compression garments with your doctor.
If you develop a fever, cough, urinary tract infection symptoms or feel worse, inform the clinic before your planned arrival. Do not hide symptoms to keep your surgery date.
- Bring a change of clothes, underwear, washable slippers, toiletries, your phone and a charger.
- Do not forget your glasses or hearing aid with its case, and the contact details of someone close to you.
- Leave jewellery, large sums of money and valuables at home.
